Ashlyn Pardee, Licensed Acupuncturist

Ashlyn began her working life far away from acupuncture and natural healthcare, pursuing a career in industrial engineering and operations management. After graduating from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1996, she moved to California, like so many others, to join the high tech craze. Life was exciting, the money was good, but it was not enough. Even with all of the freedom and financial success, Ashlyn was not happy and certainly was not healthy. In her late twenties, her anxiety, sleep, back pain, and reproductive health were bad enough that she finally left her career to search full time for a better way. After seeing friends and family members struggle to manage depression and anxiety with conventional medical treatment, Ashlyn was especially motivated to find a drug-free route to live a healthy, happy, and balanced life.

The search took Ashlyn all over the world, studying and cultivating a new strength of body and mind. On the west coast, she began cultivating a natural fitness and whole foods-based nutrition philosophy, which culminated in working with Atlanta’s Arden Zinn, named the city’s “First Lady of Fitness” by the President’s Council. Arden hosted a regular fitness program on CNN and started a very successful line of raw foods and juices long before the raw food movement was en vogue.

Knowing that nutrition alone was not the answer, Ashlyn immersed herself in yoga, eventually settling into a dedicated practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.  After deepening her practice with accomplished American and Italian teachers, Ashlyn went to Mysore, India to study with Shri K. Pattabhi Jois, the world’s oldest living master of Ashtanga.  This was where Ashlyn first saw the healing power inherent in the mind body connection.

It was the study of yoga that was Ashlyn’s first glimpse into a calm mind and its relation to health.  The meditative nature of Ashtanga Yoga was one of the most effective aspects of that practice, but there was still room to feel even better.  The next question was how much better could life be with a practice that was exclusively meditative. That sparked a quest to find a meditation practice that could reliably calm and purify the mind without drugs or distractions.  Ashlyn tried a few meditation techniques eventually committing to Vipassana meditation, taught by S.N. Goenka because of its overwhelming efficacy.  To this day, Ashlyn maintains a daily Vipassana practice and continues to meditate and volunteer at residential meditation centers run by Mr. Goenka’s appointed teachers.

In 2005, quite accidentally, Ashlyn stumbled along a form of acupuncture made famous by an Englishman named J.R. Worsley– Five Element Acupuncture.  Initially, she sought acupuncture treatment for knee pain. However, she quickly noticed that as the pain came into balance, so did the mind.  The physical symptoms improved, and her anxiety lifted.  After experiencing the rapid results of Five Element Acupuncture, she decided that this should be the primary tool to initiate the natural healing process.  Once the body is in balance, it is much easier for a patient to initiate and maintain their lifestyle with tools like meditation and nutrition (please see “Our Method”).  Ashlyn enrolled in a Master’s degree program to formally study this medicine and maintains regular, post-graduate study with senior teachers J.B Worsley and Lonny Jarrett.   You can lean more about Five Element Acupuncture here.

Adorable mutt Jet

A lot has changed for Ashlyn since 1996. These days she is getting regular acupuncture treatments, sleeping well and feeling pretty darn amazing!  When she’s not treating patients, you can find Ashlyn sharing her love of health at public lectures, enjoying nature, or making appearances around the Elmwood Village with her adorable mutt, Jet.
