Acupuncture Increases Fertility and IVF Success Ra...

Acupuncture Increases Fertility and Success Rates

for Women Undergoing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

Researchers have scoured the major medical databases for research being done on acupuncture alongside fertility and infertility treatments — especially IVF.  They found seven reputable fertility studies with 1366 participants.  I’ll spare you the statistical analysis and give you the great news:   Acupuncture increases fertility!  The evidence from this very reputable study suggests that acupuncture improves rates of pregnancy and live birth among women undergoing IVF

We often hear the word infertility, and all too quickly adopt that label.  Not to dismiss serious barriers to fertility, but for most couples fertility is all about creating the right conditions in the body, mind and spirit so that conception can occur.  It’s much like helping a fruit tree by giving it good soil,  good water and the appropriate fertilizer.   At our Buffalo, NY,  clinic we help many couples to conceive long before IVF is even a consideration.  For those patients who do have serious fertility challenges, we work in tandem with your IVF treatments to not only increase your chances of success, but also to help you stay peaceful, balanced and present for the whole experience.

This article was published in the British Medical Journal, but is just as relevant here in Buffalo :-)  The Full article can be found at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2265327/

Buffalo, NY – Acupuncture Improves Postopera...

acupuncture for postoperative pain Buffalo NYGreat news from the British Journal of Anaesthesia regarding acupuncture and it’s use in treating post operative pain. This article, done in 2008, examined all of the research found in four of the world’s major databases for peer reviewed medical research that covered the use of acupuncture for treating post operative recovery. They looked only at randomized controlled trials using acupuncture vs. sham acupuncture as a control.

Specifically, they looked at postoperative pain intensity, opioid consumption, and opioid related side effects. They found that the acupuncture patients:

- consumed less opioid pain killers
- experienced significantly less pain
- had fewer side effects like nausea, dizziness, sedation, itchiness, and urinary retention

The conclusion:
“Perioperative acupuncture may be a useful adjunct for acute postoperative pain management.”

Acupuncture for Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and Stress

Yet another positive peer-reviewed study on the effects of acupuncture from the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease (June 2007).  This time the study is on post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Researchers studied 73 people with a diagnosis of PTSD.  They looked at scores for depression, anxiety, and impairment.  One group in the study was assigned to 12 weeks of psychotherapy (cognitive behavioral therapy), one group was given 12 weeks of acupuncture, and the control group was put on a wait-list with the option to get treatment later or accept a referral.

The results showed that both the acupuncture patients and the psychotherapy clients both experienced statistically significant improvements in their anxiety and depression, and the benefits lasted for three months after the treatment ended.

Many of our patients at our Buffalo NY clinic get the best of both worlds by combining acupuncture and psychotherapy.  …and they swear by the results!  We see great results not only with PTSD but with most depression and anxiety symptoms.

Goodbye Migraines

headacheThe British Medical Journal (March 2004) reports that acupuncture helps people who suffer from chronic headaches, especially migraines, experience fewer headaches and a better quality of life than those who received standard medical care alone.

This was a large study enrolling 401 patients who reported having at least two headaches per month.  Most patients reported having migraine headaches.   Half the participants received 12 acupuncture treatments over three months along with standard medical care.  The other group continued with standard medical care only.

These results were compiled one year after the treatment.  The group who received acupuncture treatment had the following benefits:

  • 22 fewer days with headaches
  • 15% less medicine required for headaches
  • 25% fewer doctor’s visits
  • 15% fewer sick days

The British researchers concluded that acupuncture is a relatively cost-effective headache treatment when compared with other medical care for headaches that is covered by the National Health Service of the United Kingdom.

Sounds like a great idea for American health care reform.  The good news is that you can get this kind of care right here in Buffalo, NY.

Isn’t it time that you had some relief from your headaches?  Give us a call for a free consultation.
