The Science of Acupuncture Simplified

From a strictly scientific perspective, we know that Acupuncture done properly:

  • Promotes blood flow and therefore increases improves the distribution of everything transported in the blood like oxygen, nutrients, immune substances, hormones, natural painkillers and anti-inflammatories.
  • Stimulates the body’s built-in healing mechanisms by activating the nervous, immune and endocrine systems.
  • Releases natural painkillers. Inserting a needle sends a signal to the brain, that triggers the release of natural painkillers like norepinephrine, endorphins, and enkephalin.
  • Reduces both the intensity and perception of chronic pain.
  • Relaxes muscles taking the pressure off of  joints and nerves.
  • Reduces stress by triggering the release of natural feel good chemicals.

These benefits should happen at a minimum if you are getting good acupuncture, but the potential of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine is so much greater than these short term benefits!

Going beyond the science

Removing the Obstructions:

In order to experience true health, we must first remove the obstacles obscuring our innate health. At Acupuncture Buffalo, we know that deep within all of us lies a seed of health and vitality.  In childhood, healing happens quickly and emotions are expressed in full. We are open and vulnerable. As we go though life, we develop coping mechanisms as the mind, body, and spirit adapt to our developing identity. We unconsciously cover our inner seed with layers upon layers of conditioning.  Somewhere along the way, our inner seed of healing seems dim as it becomes harder to see through the layers piled on top . Our health plateaus or diminishes, and we no longer feel like ourselves. The first step of your treatment at Acupuncture Buffalo will be aimed at finding and removing those blocks to healing. As layer after layer of these blocks are cleared, you will feel more and more like yourself. Symptoms like fatigue, pain, irritation, and depression will start losing their grip.

Charging the Battery:

Once the seed of healing is no longer obscured, we will focus your treatment on nurturing and strengthening that seed so that it can continue to flourish. Sometimes it is helpful to think of this seed like the battery of an electric car. The battery has a finite life, but with proper maintenance, we can expect it to charge and recharge over and over many times. Treatment at Buffalo Natural Health and Acupuncture is aimed at ensuring that your battery is recharging as well as it can. Acupuncture, nutrition, and your choices in life can have a profound effect on the life of your battery.

In the case of the electric car, a healthy battery will have enough energy to run the engine, the headlights, the radio, and so on. In you, a fully functioning battery results in faster healing, graceful menopause, increased fertility, a stronger immune system, emotional balance, healthy digestion, and the ability to better function with chronic pain.

This kind of acupuncture and Chinese medicine is truly holistic, in that the benefits happen to the whole person.  Some treatment, Including some other styles of acupuncture, focus exclusively on temporarily alleviating a symptom while we expect all aspects of you to feel better as treatment progresses.   While you may originally seek treatment for a specific symptom, we think you will be pleasantly surprised to see just how much more you get out of treatment.

Going Beyond (The NICER method):

Our goal at Buffalo Natural Health and Acupuncture is to help you cultivate your own healing and maintain the confident, peaceful, feeling that comes from good health. Many people find that once they start to feel like themselves again, they want more out of treatment than they initially imagined. With renewed vigor and inspiration, now it is time to look deeply at how we can optimize ourselves through nutrition, intention, exercise, and rest to become fit vehicles for the change we want to see in our homes, our communities and in the world.

Over years of treating patients, we have noticed who maintains lasting results and have created a specific method to help you create and maintain exuberant heath beyond your acupuncture treatments. We call it the NICER method of health — Nutrition, Intention, Connection, Exercise and Rest. These five focus areas form the pillars of good health and happiness. Your experience of vibrant health in the body, mind and spirit is a direct result of how much you cultivate these pillars. Our NICER materials are available to all of our clients, and many are available free of charge to anyone in our online community.
